We receive renewable energy from, believe it or not, two local landfills in the form of methane gas.

The Covel Gardens landfill (9.6 MW) and the Nelson Gardens Landfill (4.2 MW; a closed landfill) provide nearly 14 MW of renewable power, derived from decomposing wastes that create various gases, including methane.

The gases are cleaned, compressed and turned into fuel, which drives generators to create electricity. That electricity is then fed into CPS Energy’s distribution system, and eventually makes its way to customers.

Landfill Gas is 0.2% of our generating capacity.
